Big Dumb Project
Big Dumb Project (BDP) was created 26 October 2010 by mistersc and a team of builders. It is located about 2/3rds of the way between Spawn and Hub St John, or just north of Second Continent.
MisterSC recalled: '"I saw this valley and thought it was relatively flat and why not flatten it all the way? I'll make a big smooth green treeless area on the next map. Then I got the better (?) idea that I would make a big smooth green treeless area in the SKY above this now-flattened valley. Rationale? I like to do Big Dumb Things. So, people came out to help - apparently it's hard to resist hearing people chat "Wow, this thing is really starting to black out the sun" and "How many blocks is this going to take again?" Okay I won't lie, I was directly asking people to come see and bring dirt so that we wouldn't run out. Anyway, a ton of people showed up. Let's see ... inigo2, _da, mikeside, rpvernon, revhippie, fleacircus, InsaneJawn, keithcalder, johnstein and eventually beardlace after I was already gone. I may have missed someone, there were a lot of people out there. We finished paving the sky itself in one night, which speaks volumes to the hard work of my fellow Aporkalyptians.'
The project became dormant through much of early 2011 and became a wide open area populated with wild sheep and pigs. A circular railroad track allowed people to ride the rail to look for animals to harvest. In March 2011 an ultra-long overland rail line from Sunrise to Spawn reached here, and was later connected to Rotato Line once permission was secured from Kabaddi, who owned the tunnels leading east from BDP.
August 2011 community build
MisterSC invited players to come out and build in August 2011, resulting in a festival weekend at BDP. Projects built included a false nether, Sigheim Embassy, a Walmart, a Starbucks, a memorial to Gruntee's wolf, the 9/11 Memorial Grinder, a giant squid grinder on the roof, a rollercoaster tour route, and a number of art projects.
At one point during the weekend, mapcratic was attempting to build a TNT amusement machine in the roof of Walmart. A redstone design error led to the entire arsenal of TNT being ignited at once, blowing up half of Walmart and resulting in a 20x20 hole in the side of BDP. Fortunately builders were onsite and got the damage patched up in less than half an hour.
