Ankh-Morpork (or MorePork) is a city inspired by the the fictional city Ankh-Morpork from Terry Pratchett's Discworld series of novels. The intention is both to recreate many landmarks from the novels, as well as to serve as a general fantasy/early industrial themed city open to public building.

How to get there

Take the Warp gate to the Morpork Hub. You will arrive in the Guild of Tourists in the center of Ankh-Morpork.

From Spawn, go through the nether gate, and follow the signs to use the tunnel towards South Continent/Ankh Morpork. This turns right after a few hundred meters. Total walking distance 600m.

Or use the NHN (Nether high speed rail network) It's probably the second stop west from spawn. Just follow the signs, really.

If you wan't to go there without using the Nether, either take the i60 from New Ham, or use the tram network from spawn, and uhm, hang on, let me check...

Hub and Minecart Station Location

The hub portal is located in the Tourist Guild on Broadway in the center of the city, next to the river.

Across the street is a lift to the main minecart station. The building has two white T's on the front.

See the section on the Tram System further down for more details.

10 Things to see in Ankh-Morpork before you die, on 1 PorkBuck a day

The river Ankh

Flowing all through the city is the magnificent river Ankh, the only river so polluted, if you were to fall in you are more likely to suffocate than drown.

The Opera House

Just up the street and across the river from the Tourist Guild, on top of the Isle of Gods, lies the Great Opera House. Take in a great show any night of the week except Mondays through Sundays.

Unseen University

From any point in the city you should be able to see a bloody big tower. That's the Tower of Art at the center of the world premiere magical university, UU. Climb to the top of the tower for a great view of the city, or read a book in the well stocked library.

The Shades

A testament to improvised affordable architecture, this so called slum is as far away from the rest of the city as possible, but oddly enough, just across the river from the most expensive properties in the city. When exiting the Tourist Guild, go straight along the river until you hear a stabbing.

The Guilds

All along the river near the Isle of Gods on the Morpork side you will find a myriad of guilds. You will laugh, you will cry, you will be robbed and/or assassinated. Have a look around, but please, no flash photography without a Painters and Iconographers Guild card!

...and five beggars under the Brass Bridge

This is where the 1 PorkBuck or $AM comes in, give it to them or risk being leered at and haunted by an incorporeal smell the rest of your visit.

Areas

Ankh (upper class housing)

Morpork (Lower class housing)

The Shades (Deadly slums)

The University and palace with surrounding parks

The Guild district

The Temple District

Building Style

Fantasy/Medieval or early industrial.

Cramped city housing with overhanging second storeys, dangerous alleys.

Towers should be quite a bit lower than the Tower of Art at Unseen University.

Try to vary up your material usage. Use more than two materials and break up the surface of your building to keep it interesting (where appropriate).

For some good ideas for roofs, checks out the guilds on Pleaders Row by the river. The important thing to remember is that extending the roof one tile beyond the walls is a very good idea.

We reserve the right to do cosmetic adjustments to the exterior of buildings that disrupt the visual style of the city. Especially if your building is in a very visible location. If you put up a sign indicating you built it we will try to contact you first. This will usually only involve adding some roof bits and fixing the corners of your building.

Best Practices

Mines and cellars: The city is not as much built on a swamp as it is built on older pieces of Ankh-Morpork. And the dwarves often mine through people's cellars. Good quality tunneling should be encouraged.

Absolutely no strip mining above the diamond layer. I realize this probably does not actually occur, but the point is that creative building takes absolute precedence over mining for resources. Most such projects will be above the diamond layer. However, if you do make a great dwarf hall or something, feel free to undo a local ugly strip mine.

"It has been continuously stated that anyone with a pickaxe and a good sense of direction could reach anywhere in Ankh-Morpork by knocking walls down in a straight line" [1]

Rooftops: ladders, walkways and connecting rooftops would be a welcome feature for aspiring assassins.

Streets and alleys: The street map will probably be a bit more maze-like than usual, Alleys between houses are encouraged.

When following the official map. the cardinal directions are upside down because of the layout of the local valley. Hubwise is south, Rimwise is North, Turnwise is east and withershins is west.

Construction Progress

The idea for the city was proposed by Synthesis, and land has been donated by Btford.

Building is well under way. Participation on all levels is highly encouraged.

Also we have a lot of terraforming to do. Please donate TNT if you have some to spare.

Utility Buildings

These are public buildings that serve a function beyond the cosmetic

The Farmers Guild - Small wheat farm. Located on Pleaders Row (Guild area by the river)

Frost Alley Hatchery - Egg Machine. Throw in your eggs, idle for a while. Located between the Day Watch house and Filigree street (goes from Broadway by the palace)

Palace Cellar Cactus and Reed farm - In the basement below the palace there are a few reeds and cacti for your convenience.

Tram System

The main Tram station is on Broadway opposite the Tourist Guild. It connects to:

  • South Hub via Well of Souls II and Ford Depths.
  • Deep Blue via Le Cochon Bleu
  • Occidental Hub and Besterly Station via the Local Lines.

Local lines go between the Tower of Art, Broadway, the Shades, Ankh Hill and Take it to the Bridge.

Right click the Lift Up / Lift Down signs inside the lifts to get from the street to the station. Liftless access is currently not available from the Shades.
