The Feed The Beast mod pack contains a lot of mods, all of which change the Minecraft world in some way. Here's a reference to figure out what's what. Information about most of these can be found at the Feed the Beast Wiki, but for more specific information links to each mod's wiki have been provided where possible. For some mods, the Technic Pack Wiki and the Tekkit Wiki may have additional information.

World Gen

New worlds to explore, also changes to traditional world generation.

  • Mystcraft: creation of linking books, new worlds
  • Twilight Forest: a whole new world with boss monster challenges
  • Nether Ores: equivalents of normal ore, in the nether
  • ExtrabiomesXL: many new biome types
  • Flat Bedrock: generates flat worlds with bedrock

Major tech additions

Large mod clusters implementing various kinds of technology, powered machines, and automation. The major ones are BuildCraft3 and IndustrialCraft2 but there are some other compatible and competing mods as well.

IndustrialCraft 2

Probably the biggest mod in FTB. IC machines are powered by "EU" (Energy Units).

Adds ores: Copper, Tin, Silver, Uranium

Adds trees: Rubber

  • GregTech: major IC2 upgrade, also rebalances items
    • Adds ores: Bauxite, Cinnabar, Sapphire
  • Advanced Machines: additional IC2 machines
  • Advanced Solar Panels: additional IC2 energy sources
  • Charge Pads: charge IC2 items
  • Gravitation Suite: high-end Iridium upgrades for IC2
  • Nuclear Control: help manage IC2 nuclear reactors
  • Modular Force Field System: IC2 force fields
    • Adds ores: Monazit
  • Modular Powersuits: IC2 powered armor ("Very early stage")
  • Petroleum Generator: make EU from fuel and oil

BuildCraft 3

An "alternative" to IndustrialCraft. BC machines are powered by "MJ" (Minecraft Joules). Conversion from EU to MJ is possible using Electrical Engines.

Forestry

Nature-oriented tools and enhancements. Uses both IC and BC items. Adds beekeeping.

Adds ores: Apatite

  • Extra Bees: expanded beekeeping
  • Thaumic Bees: special bees for Thaumcraft

RedPower 2

Mostly focused on enhancing Redstone circuits, but adds some new machines that run on "Blutricity" as well.

Adds ores: Tungsten, Sapphire, Green Sapphire, Ruby

  • TubeStuff: more RedPower machines

ComputerCraft

Adds computers that can be programmed in Lua, and "Turtles" that can be programmed to perform various functions.

  • MiscPeripherals: additions to ComputerCraft for advanced turtles

Other techtree mods

  • XyCraft: Early stage mod for a new tech tree. Entirely cosmetic at the moment.
    • Adds ores: Xychorium (common glowing ore with three gems, not to be confused with Amber), Aluminum (glowing ore), Quartz (breakable crystal)
    • Adds world features: Corn seeds
  • MineFactory Reloaded: IC2/BC3 enhancements?
  • Applied Energistics: "Matter Energy" technologies. IC and BC compatible.
  • Factorization: barrels, ore extraction, automated crafting, "wrath system"
  • Railcraft: major overhaul of mine carts and tracks
  • Steve's Carts 2: major overhaul of mine carts and tracks

Major magic additions

Whole new game systems with a magical theme.

  • Thaumcraft 3: magic suffuses the world, make wands, golems, etc
    • Adds ores: Infused Stone (glowing ore that drops magical shards when broken), Amber (orange glowing ore)
    • Adds world features: Barrows (dungeon-like cobblestone structures that contain evil essence), wisps (glowing flying mobs, often hostile)
    • Adds tree types: Greatwood (large trees with magical properties), Silverwood (blue leaves, reduces local magic flux)
  • Soul Shards: trap souls, create monster spawners
  • Xeno's Reliquary: magical items: invisiblity, teleportation, etc

UI Changes

Various mods that make the UI better.

  • ForgeIRC: IRC client built in to Minecraft
  • IntegratedSoundpacks: sound customization
  • Inventory Tweaks: sortable inventory
  • Not Enough Items: Inventory UI, lists items and recipes
  • VoxelMap: fancy minimap
  • VoxelMenu: fancy game menu
  • VoxelPlayer: multiplayer UI enhancements (press F9)

Small additions

Small mods that add limited, focussed capabilities.

  • Iron Chests: larger chest storage
  • BiblioCraft: display bookshelves, armor stands, etc
  • Chicken Chunks: adds the chunk loader block
  • Equivalent Exchange 3: alchemical transformations of items
  • EnderStorage: Alters the behavior of Ender Chests.
  • GraviGun: Half-Life 2-like gravity gun
  • Obsidian Pressure Plates: a pressure plate only players trigger
  • OmniTools: converts items that are similar in various mods
  • Portal Gun: "Portal"-themed items
  • Power Converters: convert IC2, BC2, etc power
  • Secret Rooms: camouflaged blocks
  • Wireless Redstone: lightweight wireless redstone signals
